Downtown Saranac Lake is an urban oasis surrounded by scenic mountains and lakes where music, art, and great mountain energy merge to create a lively scene. Enjoy galleries, a theater, music venues, bars, shopping, dining, the landmark Hotel Saranac, and the Adirondack Carousel which features 24 handcrafted Adirondack animals.
Saranac Lake’s downtown is rich with history from its former days as an international treatment center for tuberculosis to its notable vacationers—including Albert Einstein. As you explore, watch for the signs that mark the entry ways to the RiverWalk and follow the brick path along the Saranac River as it winds through town. Dine in one of the restaurants or get food to go and sit at the picnic tables in Riverside Park.
There’s fun for the whole family at Mount Pisgah and Willam Morris Park, near the old train depot, where there’s a playground and the Adirondack Carousel. It's also easy to get out on the trails with snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals and lessons available both in town at Dewey Mountain or on one of an endless supply of wilderness trails.

Art & Entertainment:
The first Friday of every month is a great time to be in Saranac Lake, as the galleries all host art openings. Pendragon Theatre is an award-winning professional theatre and the only year-round professional repertory in the Adirondacks. They offer a full range of live performances like revived Broadway classics, family-friendly plays, and seasonal offerings. BluSeed Studios is also a must-visit space. Check out the contemporary art in the upstairs gallery, catch some live music, or take a workshop on the ground floor. |
Enjoy history with a self-guided tour of the village's unique "cure cottage" architecture, or join a walking tour that includes a stop in the Saranac Laboratory Museum. The Saranac Lake Free Library houses the Dickert Wildlife Collection, and wooden versions of some of the same animals can be ridden at the Adirondack Carousel in William Morris Park.
Fresh Off the Farm: The small farms movement is taking over in the Adirondacks and we couldn’t be happier. All four seasons bring different local products to the table, whether it’s luscious heirloom tomatoes in the height of summer or hearty root vegetables in the depths of winter.
The farmers markets are more than just food, though. They are spaces where community and travelers alike come out for live music, local art, and of course, locally grown food. It’s fun for the whole family and a great way to experience the Adirondacks!

Health & Wellness:
Saranac Lake's tradition of revitalizing peoples' health and well-being began in the late 1800s when Dr. E.L. Trudeau recognized that the mountainous environment seemed to provide a cure for tuberculosis. The development of a pharmaceutical remedy for the disease in the 1950s brought the cure era to a close, yet Saranac Lake's wellness movement continues.
